Acidophilous beech forests

new search

The alliance Luzulo-Fagion sylvaticae includes forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and, less commonly, Abies alba, which occur on nutrient-poor acidic soils over hard siliceous bedrock types. At higher altitudes Picea abies is often present in the tree layer. The shrub layer of these forests is poorly developed and the herb layer is species-poor. In the Czech Republic these forests occur in a broad altitudinal range from 200 to 1200 m, in both the Bohemian Massif and the Carpathians.
