Meadows and mesic pastures

new search

This class includes mown meadows and mesic pastures of temperate regions of Europe and adjacent parts of Asia. With a few exceptions, the class encompasses secondary vegetation developed under the long-term continuous influence of humans in habitats that would be naturally occupied by mesic or wet, broad-leaved forests. A large diversity of meadows, typical of the Czech landscape before the 1950s, is currently declining due to the abandonment of poorly accessible or less productive sites along with the concomitant intensification of fodder production at other sites.
